As the first real signs of spring arrived at Chase Park, Cannock 3s welcomed Finchfield under clear blue skies and a warm sun, eager to continue their promotion charge. The fresh air carried a sense of renewal and optimism, and the hosts certainly played with a flourish befitting the season.
Pre-match preparations took an unexpected turn when the Finchfield captain found himself caught in the crossfire of the pitch watering system - an unplanned but refreshing amusing early shower that set the tone for a lively afternoon.
With the sun on their backs, Cannock started brightly, playing some of their most fluent hockey of the season. The passing was crisp, movement was sharp, and the team looked full of energy—perhaps inspired by the longer days and rising temperatures. Their efforts soon bore fruit when ‘Wingers’ found himself in the right spot to calmly slot home the opening goal. Cannock could have had more in the first half, but Finchfield stood firm, ensuring the game remained competitive heading into the break.
At halftime as well as pre-game, The leadership team of Paul and JD delivered a rousing team talk, demanding more of the same but with an extra edge to finish the game off. JD’s tactical words in particular clearly struck a chord, as Cannock came out for the second half determined to push on. Once again, ‘Wingers’ proved to be the man in the right place at the right time, doubling his tally and giving the hosts a deserved cushion. His sharp finishing and all-around performance saw him voted Man of the Match—a fitting reward for a player in full bloom.
A special mention must also go to Chaddo, who stepped into central midfield seamlessly alongside Spriggs, bringing his usual consistency and composure to help control the game. With some key players missing, his performance was crucial in keeping Cannock on the front foot.
To their credit, Finchfield didn’t wilt. Despite being under pressure, they defended resolutely, and when their opportunity came with 10 minutes to play, they took it well, pulling a goal back to set up a tense finale.
But Cannock, like a garden flourishing under the first warmth of spring, held strong, seeing out the game to keep their promotion hopes well and truly alive. Their push for second place remains in full swing as they continue to grow as a team, developing into a side with real potential as well as for the future of the whole club.
For captain Paul, it was another proud day at the helm. Though he took home ‘Dick of the Day’ for a quiet second half, his leadership continues to bring together an exciting blend of youth and experience. Watching his young guns thrive alongside the battle-hardened veterans is exactly what makes this side so promising. Every game is another step forward, another moment of growth, and another sign that Cannock 3s are building something special.
At the final whistle, smiles and sunshine filled the air. With a squad playing with confidence and camaraderie, the future looks bright at Chase Park.
