Cannock 3rds travelled to Lilleshall fully aware they were stepping into the lion’s den, facing a Newport 2nds side notorious for smashing teams into double figures without reply. While the odds were stacked high against them, Cannock stood tall, sling in hand, ready to face the league leading opposition.
Setting up with a half-court press, Cannock absorbed wave after wave of relentless Newport pressure. The defensive set-up, marshalled by the Director General himself, Wiggy, held firm. Barking orders and ensuring the troops kept their shape, Wiggy delivered a colossal performance that earned him the well-deserved title of Man of the Match.
Cannock’s effort was bolstered by a number of youngsters stepping up from the 4ths, showing no fear in the face of Newport’s overwhelming firepower. Their energy and willingness to take on an unfamiliar set-up gave Cannock the legs to counter when the opportunity arose.
By half-time, the score stood at 2-0 to Newport. Goliath had landed his punches, but David was still standing. With inspiring words from Martin ringing in their ears and an ask from JD for more of the same the challenge was set for Cannock to maintain their intensity and continue to frustrate their opponents.
The second half followed a similar script, with Cannock putting their bodies on the line, pushing through the pain barrier of a second game in as many games and sticking resolutely to the game plan. Newport managed to add just one more goal to their tally—a strike that can only be described as a ‘worldie’, leaving Cannock with no chance of a return.
Shout outs also go Micklewright, particularly for his offensive/clearance hits and to Dink who pulled off some superb saves once again but did forget to take the SC masks with him for the second half, earning himself DOTD…
At the final whistle, the scoreboard read 3-0, but the performance told a far greater story. Cannock may not have toppled Goliath, but they stood their ground, fought with heart, and walked away with their heads held high. This was a display of grit, discipline, and resilience against the strongest side they will face this season.
As Cannock march forward, buoyed by this huge effort, they will take the lessons learned into next week, aiming to continue their push towards a top-end finish. Goliath may have won the day, but David proved he’s not to be underestimated.
